I’ve never seen Faster Pussycat Kill Kill but I want to. It looks like the DVD is out of print, however…
There isn’t a lot of deep thought to this cartoon. The other day I was thinking about how there’s a lot of humor in mistranslated movie titles. For example, from this webpage we learn that the French called the Matrix by its plot description, which is young people traversing dimensions while wearing sunglasses. Or this one has a LOT of gems: Babe, which I watched tonight, was called “The Happy Dumpling-To-Be Who Talks and Solves Agricultural Problems” in China, and I have NO idea how interview with a vampire became “So, you are a lawyer”. (Actually, those are fake…. but awesome, and plausible enough to fool the Wall Street Journal. However, I do assume the WSJ did enough research that we can trust that Fargo really was translated as “Mysterious Murder in Snowy Cream.”)
So, anyway, I was trying to think up a fake translation to do a comic on. Faster Pussycat came up because of its ridiculous (and provocative) title and then it stuck around because I very rarely turn down a chance to make fun of Japan’s penchant for ritual suicide. My only real question with it was: how many bad translations to use? I almost made a list of them. “Accelerate Mammal Murders Murderers” has a certain ring to it, you know?
